#Coach: The Wind Beneath Your Wings….a mini-series
#Coach — Part 1: The Meaning of #Coach
In this 4 part series we will examine the phenomenon of coaching…what it means, why it is significant, the various categories of coaches, and why even the most successful humans work with coaches to deliver their peak performance.
#TBT side note … Once a cheerleader, always a cheerleader. Ever since I can remember I have been cheering on random folks and lifting them up, first for sports teams as a cheerleader, to college freshman as an RA, to fashion colleagues as a manager, to students as a professor, to job seeking friends and now girl bosses as a coach… cheering them to victory, motivating and inspiring them to success…supporting their hopes and dreams. It only makes sense that I have chosen to take coaching to the next level as a professional.
As my good friend and colleague Marie Jo Caesar (who happens to be a wealth coach) reminds me: “Even Olympic Athletes Have Coaches”. So let’s get down to basics.
What is a Coach?
A coach is a professional who provides guidance, support, and expertise to help individuals or teams achieve their goals. Coaches come in many forms - from business and life coaches to sports coaches and executive coaches. Their primary role is to:
Offer an outside perspective
Provide accountability
Share specialized knowledge and experience
Help identify blind spots and areas for improvement
Motivate and inspire
Develop strategies for success
Why Everyone Needs a Coach
1. Even the Best Have Coaches
Olympic athletes, despite being at the pinnacle of their sports, still rely heavily on coaches. This fact underscores a crucial point: no matter how skilled or successful you are, there's always room for improvement and external guidance.
Example: Simone Biles, one of the most decorated gymnasts in history, works closely with her coaches to refine her techniques and maintain her competitive edge.
2. Objective Perspective
Coaches provide an unbiased, external viewpoint. They can see things we might miss about ourselves or our situations.
Example: In business, a coach can help an entrepreneur identify market opportunities or operational inefficiencies that they might be too close to see.
3. Accountability and Motivation
Coaches keep us accountable to our goals and provide motivation when we face challenges.
Example: A health coach can help maintain motivation and track progress towards fitness goals, especially when initial enthusiasm wanes.
4. Skill Development and Knowledge Transfer
Coaches bring specialized knowledge and can teach new skills or strategies.
Example: A public speaking coach can provide techniques to improve delivery and engage audiences more effectively.
5. Emotional Support and Confidence Building
Coaches offer emotional support and help build confidence, which is crucial in both personal and professional realms.
Example: A life coach can help someone navigate a major life transition, providing support and boosting confidence during uncertain times.
6. Efficiency and Faster Progress
Working with a coach can accelerate progress towards goals by providing a structured approach and avoiding common pitfalls.
Example: A career coach can help streamline the job search process, potentially leading to faster employment or career advancement.
7. Challenging Limiting Beliefs
Coaches help identify and challenge limiting beliefs that might be holding us back.
Example: A mindset coach can help an entrepreneur overcome imposter syndrome and take bold actions to grow their business.
Why Coaches are Necessary in Life
Continuous Growth: The world is constantly changing, and to keep up, we need to continuously learn and adapt. Coaches facilitate this ongoing growth.
Overcoming Plateaus: When we've reached a certain level of success, it can be hard to push beyond. Coaches help break through plateaus.
Navigating Complexity: Life and business are increasingly complex. Coaches help navigate this complexity with clarity and purpose.
Maximizing Potential: Most people never reach their full potential. Coaches help individuals tap into their hidden capabilities and maximize their potential.
Balancing Multiple Roles: Many people juggle multiple roles (e.g., entrepreneur, parent, partner). Coaches help maintain balance and excel in various areas of life.
Preparing for Opportunities: Coaches help individuals prepare for and recognize opportunities when they arise.
Building Resilience: In facing challenges, coaches help build resilience and develop a growth mindset.
Today’s Take:
The saying "You can't see the picture when you're inside the frame" aptly describes why coaches are necessary. They provide the external viewpoint, expertise, and support needed to achieve peak performance, whether in sports, business, or life. Just as Olympic athletes rely on coaches to reach the pinnacle of their sports, individuals in all walks of life can benefit from coaching to achieve their personal and professional goals. In an increasingly competitive and complex world, having a coach can be the difference between mediocrity and excellence, between reaching for dreams and actually achieving them.
